Yeah, and so did Philip Morris, Countrywide Financial, etc. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but it’s nonsensical to argue that “we’re simply giving the customer what he wants” is an airtight defense.

See, here’s the thing: Neither Bloomberg nor McDonald’s are completely right on this issue. Clearly there’s a fight going on regarding the overall health of our society, and in some quarters, it’s simply being lost. Bloomberg is right to focus on the problem, but really, the target here is not so much the consumer but the corporation. If you limited the amount of corn syrup one could get from an average meal at Mickey D’s, rather than the portion size, you’d get much further.

Bloomberg has done good things on this issue in general — his anti-trans-fat push was successful, and having restaurants list calorie counts on their menus is something they should simply do without being asked. But, unlike smoking, this feels like an issue that may need to be handled at a level above the consumer, at the manufacturing level.

And to everyone, a suggestion: Stop drinking soda for a week or two. Switch to water. Then go back to it. You’ll notice something weird happen — you’ll find it much stronger than it was a week before. That’s because it was always that strong, but you had gotten used to it. Keep that in mind.

"It somehow became an article of faith on the right that Obama is ‘the most extreme President in..."

“It somehow became an article of faith on the right that Obama is ‘the most extreme President...

My friends are so much cooler than me.
Not long after Dodd-Frank got passed, the company made arguments for a loophole in the Volcker Rule, which takes effect in July, to allow some of the types of portfolio hedging that that company used as it produced a $2 billion loss recently. “JPMorgan was the one that made the strongest arguments to allow hedging, and specifically to allow this type of portfolio hedging,” noted one Treasury Department official. Officials who worked on the law, such as Sen. Carl Levin, have made it clear that allowing for this type of activity was not their intention with the law. Now, they have a pretty clear $2 billion argument against allowing such a loophole to get through. (photo by Scott Eells/Bloomberg; edit for clarity)

madamenoire:

Black females are even scarcer. However, some black women have been trailblazers in the political arena, shaping history and leaving a legacy that cannot be erased.

The 13-member commission of California citizens is in charge of the state’s redistricting plan.

New favorite Tumblr: Who Needs Feminism? So proud of my alma mater. Read their op-ed in The Chronicle: here.

Identify yourself as a feminist today and many people will immediately assume you are man-hating, bra-burning, whiny liberal. Perhaps a certain charming radio talk show host will label you as a “Feminazi” or “slut.” Even among more moderate crowds, feminism is still seen as too radical, too uncomfortable, or simply unnecessary. Feminism is both misunderstood and denigrated regularly right here on Duke’s campus. We, the 16 women of Professor Rachel Seidman’s course on Women in the Public Sphere, have decided to fight back against these popular misconceptions surrounding the feminist movement. Our class was disturbed by what we perceive to be an overwhelmingly widespread belief among students that today’s society no longer needs feminism. In order to change this perception on campus, we have launched a PR campaign for feminism. We aim to challenge existing stereotypes surrounding feminists and assert the importance of feminism today.

April 2nd, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

Anybody over the age of five knows you don’t play with people’s money, and when we’re talking millions of dollars, things could get ugly.

As you know by now, there were three wining tickets in last week’s $656 million Mega Millions lotto, one of which a Maryland woman named Mirlande Wilson has laid claim to. The problem is Mirlande says the $105 million lump sum she’ll receive after taxes is all hers but her coworkers at McDonald’s say they all went in on that ticket together and the money belongs to all of them. Now Mirlande is trying to explain her way out of the million-dollar split.
